Landmarks is gearing up for another exciting season of Landmarks Video! In its fifth season you’ll see works by Rokni Haerizadeh, Eleanor Antin, Chen Sai Hua Kuan, and Chris Burden, among others.
Each video screens for a month on a media station at the southwest entrance to the "ART building":http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/art.html, and is accompanied by supplementary materials written by Landmarks Video Curator Kanitra Fletcher. Ms. Fletcher is a doctoral student in the Department of the History of Art and Visual Studies at Cornell University and is currently based in Houston. She has been on staff at Landmarks since 2008 and has penned the essays since the second season of Landmarks Video. “I have always been interested in video art and how it enables artists to create new, complex types of imagery and set their ideas in motion. Working with Landmarks has allowed me to further explore the history and potential of video art on a broader level.”
This season features works by artists from six different countries. “The program offers the opportunity for UT students to become familiar with artists that have had limited exposure in the United States. They can see a range of stylistic and thematic approaches to video art from various parts of the world,” Ms. Fletcher explains. This year, she took on a larger role and worked with Landmarks Director Andrée Bober to make selections. Both are especially pleased to feature _Space Drawing No. 7_ by Chen Sai Hua Kuan, a Singaporean artist. “Andrée and I were instantly drawn to this video. It’s a fun, fast-paced piece.”
Next year she’ll curate the whole season. She hopes to add even more diversity to the program and possibly thematic ties across several videos.
Look for videos produced by some of your favorite artists and discover new ones. Find a comfortable viewing area in order to better engage with the work. Like what you see?
