Introduction
In Curve and Shadow, No. 2, both the sculpture and the shadow it creates are part of the work of art. Even though the sculpture itself does not move, its shadow can bend, depending on where light is coming from. Hamilton wants you to notice to how shape, light, and shadow work together.
Questions
How does the shadow change depending on your perspective?
How would it change at different times of day?
How does the color of the sculpture change the way you see or feel about it?
Activity
• Gather found objects from around your house or outside.
• Build a sculpture using your found objects. Glue pieces together if needed.
• Place your sculpture on a flat surface and turn off the lights.
• Shine a flashlight on your sculpture. Move around so that the light shines from all different angles.
• Watch how the shadow changes shape, size, and direction.
Look again
Visit Curve and Shadow, No. 2 at different times of day. Notice how the shadows look in the morning, afternoon, or evening.
