Paws for Public Art

Paws for Public Art

Launched in 2023 to celebrate Landmarks 15th anniversary, Paws for Public Art promotes wellbeing by providing mental health breaks with art and animals. This annual event partners with the Longhorn Wellness Center to help alleviate stress each spring during university midterms. In the inaugural year, miniature goats, hedgehogs, bunnies, chicks and piglets were brought to campus with petting zoos stationed at four iconic works from Landmarks’ collection.

This year, Paws for Public Art returns March 12 with petting zoos hosted at: Clock KnotMonochrome for AustinCircle with Towers, and Square Tilt. A specialized mobile tour on Landmarks App will offer insights into the art and animals, guide visitors through exercises and meditations, and provide an array of mental health resources.

Paws for Public Art is always free and welcomes the public.

Animal Welfare

Landmarks is deeply committed to animal welfare. The petting zoos featured in Paws for Public Art uphold the highest standards of care, exceeding USDA Animal Welfare Act requirements. At our events, all animals are treated with respect, provided ample shade and fresh water, and rotated regularly to prevent stress or prolonged handling.

Veterinarians conduct routine health checkups and provide specialized care as needed for the animals at our animal care partners. When animals retire, they remain at the farms where they were raised or are placed with trusted local farmers or residents. Importantly, these organizations are not affiliated with any agricultural industry or corporation, reinforcing their commitment to ethical animal stewardship.
