Landmarks recently celebrated the addition of Eamon Ore-Giron's Tras los ojos (Behind the Eyes) to its public art collection with an artist talk in collaboration with The Contemporary Austin. During the event, the artist spoke with Professor of Art History C. Ondine Chavoya and Landmarks' curatorial contributor Florencia Portocarrero. They discussed various topics related to Ore-Giron's work, including his interest in pre-Columbian, European, contemporary indigenous and popular Latin American influences.

Tras los ojos (Behind the Eyes) is a digital print based on an original painting by Ore-Giron. It is displayed in the lobby of the Sarah M. & Charles E. Seay Building, which is home to the Department of Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts. Ore-Giron created the piece with a focus on the mechanisms of visual perception and the way our eyes see and receive information.

Ore-Giron drew from various artistic movements to create the totemic design of the piece, including Brazilian Tropicalia, Latin American Concretism, Italian Futurism, and Russian Constructivism. Circular forms, inspired by ophthalmological eye charts, are layered with a hard-edged zig-zag at the center of the composition. The result is a stunning representation of the flow of information between the external world and the mind.

If you missed the event, you can still learn more about Tras los ojos (Behind the Eyes) by visiting the artist's collection page, which includes an essay, artist video, and activity guides. The artwork can be viewed in-person during open hours at the Sarah M. & Charles E. Seay Building (Monday - Friday, 7 AM - 7 PM).
