Last spring, Landmarks unveiled Tras los ojos (Behind the Eyes), a digital print on canvas by Los Angeles-based artist Eamon Ore-Giron. Commissioned by Landmarks for UT Austin’s Department of Psychology, the work explores the mechanisms of visual perception and the way in which our eyes see and receive information. Its composition includes circular forms inspired by ophthalmological eye charts, with layers and zigzags that project a sense of depth and motion.

A 2022 study for Tras los ojos was recently acquired by the Blanton Museum of Art. Serving as the basis for Ore-Giron’s installation for Landmarks, the study reveals different composition and color combinations that the artist considered as he executed the project. With both works now on campus, visitors will have a unique opportunity to examine the artist’s practice, including his process for translating an intimate work into a 13 x 15 foot installation. (The study was photographed and converted into a digital file for Landmarks which was then printed and stretched on canvas onsite.)

The Blanton’s acquisition of the study was made possible by artist and UT Austin alumna, Sara Carter, who gifted the work to the museum. It will be on view for most of this year, serving as a rich supplement to the Blanton’s holdings and enhancing the scholarly resources surrounding Landmarks’ collection.

Last year, Ore-Giron was the subject of a solo exhibition at The Contemporary Austin and is currently included in the 2024 Whitney Biennial. Learn more about Tras los ojos on the artist’s collection pagewith a curatorial essay, audio guide, and recording of the artist’s 2023 lecture in Austin.
