Sound in Sculpture Returns Oct 12

Presented in partnership with Texas Performing Arts, Landmarks, and students from the Butler School of Music Composition Department

Sound in Sculpture is a showcase of original music composed and performed by students from the Butler School of Music inspired by works in the university’s public art collection. Each premiere performance takes place against the backdrop of the site-specific work of art that inspired the piece.

The students will present compositions inspired by two works from Landmarks' collection: Mark di Suvero's Clock Knot, a towering painted steel sculpture outside the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering building; and Sarah Oppenheimer's C-010106, one of the newest additions to the Landmarks collection that pushes the boundaries between sculpture and architecture while reorienting the spaces we inhabit. The compositions will reflect a variety of styles and modes, with works ranging from a dance accompanied by electronic music to a mixed ensemble of saxophone and percussion.

The October 12 performance will begin at 6 p.m. at the site of di Suvero's sculpture, located at 200 East Dean Keeton St, off of Speedway. Audiences will then walk a short distance to the Oppenheimer installation on the Peyton Yates Family Bridge at the Gary L Thomas Energy Engineering Building. Visitors may park at the Speedway Garage, nearest to the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Building, or at any other available UT garage.
