My name is Kyla Antonio, and this summer I interned with Landmarks through the COFA Arts Administration Fellowship, a two-summer program that connects fellows with internship opportunities, financial support, and mentorship. First-year fellows intern within UT, while second-year fellows branch out into Austin-based arts institutions. I chose Landmarks as my first choice because I’ve long admired their presence across campus. As a student who attended various Landmarks events, I feel honored to have supported the organization in programming some of those very offerings.
This summer, my two main projects were helping curate Listening with Landmarks and Songs in the Skyspace. Though different in format, both involved collaborating with Austin musicians, which allowed me to approach them as a cohesive set. In my research, I prioritized organizing a unique lineup, representing many backgrounds and genres, to offer a variety of music to our audiences. While I faced challenges coordinating with artists remotely, I learned how to be communicate effectively around professionals’ busy schedules, which made each success all the more rewarding.
Even though this was just a summer-long internship, Landmarks taught me so much. I gained hands-on experience programming events from start to finish and saw firsthand the behind-the-scenes work involved in educational arts programming. This internship gave me a meaningful glimpse into structured roles in the arts and helped me grow as both a collaborator and professional. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities, trust, and support I received during my time with Landmarks, especially from my direct supervisor, Catherine Whited. I know I’ll carry everything I’ve learned with me as I continue my journey in supporting the arts.
